What a die-cut box is

A die-cut box is cut from the board with a shaped tool rather than slotted, so it can have features a regular carton cannot: hand holes, locking tabs, display cut-outs, and panels that fold into shape without glue, staples or tape.

Choose die-cut when the shape does the work. A regular slotted carton is usually the simpler answer for plain shipping.

Die-cut styles we already have dies for

An existing die means the shape is already proven. These styles are in the current range, in various sizes, and most can be printed.

  • Self-erect mailing boxes: quick to assemble, sturdy, supplied flat
  • Self-locking trays: fold into shape without glue, staples or tape, for food, cans, bottles, retail display and components
  • Carry boxes: handles built in, for gift packs, retail products and promotional kits
  • Maltese cross boxes: a solid base for large, heavy or knock-down furniture
  • Bin boxes: open-front storage bins for shelves and workbenches
  • Corner pieces: corrugated corners that protect product edges in transit

A new shape

If no existing die fits, we design the box in-house and show it in 3D before any tooling is cut, so crease positions, panel sizes and the way your logo sits are resolved on screen and on a physical sample.

Inserts and dividers are die-cut the same way. Tell us what has to stay still inside the box and we will design around it.

Printing and ordering

We print flexographically, direct onto the corrugated, in up to 4 colours, on sheets up to 2 750 mm × 1 150 mm. Printed orders need a print stereo (the plate), which is a once-off tooling cost rather than a per-order one.

Die-cut boxes are made to order. Minimum orders generally start from ±500 m² of board, so the number of boxes depends on how big the box is. Standard lead time is 7–10 working days. If your order needs a new stereo, the clock starts once that stereo lands with us — 3 to 5 working days from the moment you approve artwork.

They are supplied flat, in strapped bundles on pallets, which saves storage space until the box is packed.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I order custom die-cut boxes for my products?

Timepack makes custom die-cut boxes to order in its own factory in Gauteng and supplies them nationally. Send your product size, the shape or features you need and a quantity, and it will quote from an existing die or design a new one.

What is the difference between a die-cut box and a regular carton?

A regular slotted carton is slotted and folded, with four equal flaps that are taped or stapled shut. A die-cut box is cut with a shaped tool, so it can have locking tabs, hand holes or cut-outs, and can often fold into shape without glue or tape.

Do I have to pay for a new die?

Not always. Timepack holds existing dies in various sizes, and they can often be used or adapted. A new shape needs its own tool, and the quote says so before you commit.

Can die-cut boxes be printed?
